Three rare books are pictured. The front two are a set titled "Condition and Prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States" by Henry R. Schoolcraft with illustrations by Seth Eastman. These books were created as the result of a study collected and prepared in 1847 under the direction of the Bureau of Indian Affairs per an act of Congress passed March 3, 1847. They contain historical and statistical information respecting the history, condition, and prospects of Indian tribes of the United States. The cover of each book has the embossed drawing of an Indian scalping a white man. The third book in the background is a "Narrative journal of travels through the northwestern regions of the United States: extending from Detroit through the great chain of American lakes to the sources of the Mississippi River". This book was also by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft and contained eight copper engravings. It was published by E. & E. Hosford in Albany in 1821. These books can be found in the Rare Book Collection in the Library at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.
