Alice Steindler gently removes the dirt from around the spine (vertebra) of the stegomastodon. The excavator is a unique sight at a paleontology site. The stegomastodon is an extinct genus of gomphothere, a family of proboscideans which stood 2.8 metres (9 ft) tall and looked like a robust version of the modern elephant.
