description:
|
Tohono Oodham (Papago) men made rope out of a'ur, agave, or lechuguilla. The fibers were moistened and then pulled into a fluffy bunch and rolled into cord on the spinner's thigh. The fibers were then held taut with the left hand, while the right rolled them downward, then let them spring back and twist. After graduating from Columbia University in Anthropology, Ruth Underhill went study a group of Native Americans in southern Arizona. Through her scientific research she was able to preserve the original language, poetry and songs of the Tohono Oodham (Papago) people.
