description:
|
Carved kachina on a wooden base. This figure has a feather headdress, red ears, a black and yellow beak and feather ruff. It has red yarn adhered to each knee. The figure is painted with a blue face and brown on the top and back of its head. There is a chevron in black above the beak, a yellow yoke, and a black torso and wings. It has no arms. It wears a white kilt with a red, green and black sash. It has yellow legs and painted black and white feathers at back. Called Kwaakatsina in the Hopi Dictionary. This Kachina sometimes appears with Mud Heads at night ceremonies in March. "The dance of Kwahu, or Eagle Kachina, is a prayer for the increase of eagles. The dancer imitates the eagle by hopping, flapping wings, making pecking motions & eagle cries. As honored guests, live eagles are given presents by the Hopi. Eventually the eagles are ceremonially smothered & plucked for their feathers."
