description:
Kachina doll carved from wood. It has a reddish brown sack mask to which are fastened three gourds, one on top and one over each ear, and painted reddish brown. A rag ruff. The kilt is made from a woman's old dress. The body is painted with red-brown clay. He carries a feather and a rattle. Koyemsi is the most common Hopi clown. He appears in Mixed Kachina Dances and sometimes a group of Koyemsi appear in a dance of their own. At First Mesa they are said to sing Zuni songs. The Mudhead mana carries a water gourd or canteen on his back. The "Old Timers" used a belt to wrap the gourd around their waist. The jug brings water to the plaza for the Hopi nation.
