description:
This Talavai, or Early Morning Kachina, is carved from a single piece of wood then mounted onto an ovoid, cross-cut, section of root or limb. This base is 2.5 to 3.0 cm thick. The kachina is wearing: a white manta (shawl) with red and black edge decorations; a white kilt with red, black, and green decorations; a red, black, and green waist sash; a red, black, green, white, and blue dance sash; a pair of brown moccasins with orange ankle sashes; and a blue necklace. All of these are painted wood. Around the wrists and knees are sashes made from black commercial yarn. In the right hand, it carries three feathers and in the left an evergreen sprig made of paper evergreen needles. The mask is blue with red ears and a red tubular mouth. On the cheeks are cloud and rain symbols. The mask is topped with green feathers and backed with a fan of feathers. The skin is painted brown except for the right leg which is blue. It is in an active dance position. On the back side of the base is carved, "ARH '96".
