description:
Maria Chona of the Southern Arizona Tohono O'Odham (Papago) tribe was Ruth Underhill's subject for her book, Papago Woman (1936). Chona is shown here preparing a cactus thorn to sew the top of a basket. After graduating from Columbia University in Anthropology, Ruth Underhill studied a group of Native Americans in southern Arizona. Through her scientific research she was able to preserve the original language, poetry and songs of the Tohono O'odham (Papago) people.
