Maria Chona of the Southern Arizona Tohono O'Odham (Papago) tribe was Ruth Underhills subject for her book, Papago Woman (1936). Chona is shown here posing with her black and white finished basket made with Devils Claw and Yucca plant. After graduating from Columbia University in Anthropology, Ruth Underhill studied a group of Native Americans in southern Arizona. Through her scientific research she was able to preserve the original language, poetry and songs of the Tohono O'odham (Papago) people.
