description:
This photo is of Augustine Vigil and his wife, Lauta. On a sheet attached to the photograph is the following:"Augustine Vigil - 1845 wife Lauta - 1846 Augustine was one of of the five men who went to Washington to make the decision concerning the demarcation of the reservation and the location if it were to be in Dulce or near Tiera Amarilla. He took a Spanish friend along as his interpreter to speak in English, his thought[s] that were in Apache." "Fourth generation grandson Juan Augustine Vigil 5/17/60". Gertrude Van Roekel observed "Lauta Vigil is wearing an old-style cloth dress which clearly shows the yoke with drop-shoulders and loose over-sleeve with fitted under-sleeve. When she was working, the blanket was wrapped around and folded down at the waistline. At other times it was worn over the shoulders, or over her head if she did not want to be seen. This was used as a sleeping blanket when she was away from home."
