description:
Mattie Phone Quintana is holding the goat while the puppy is nursing. The dog associates himself with the goats, follows them to the hills as they graze, and later becomes an expert sheep (or goat) herd dog. Mattie's calico dress is a modernized version of the older, traditional dress. This change and the fact that she wears shoes instead of moccins show that she has attended school.
