Jennie and her sister, Hazel Veneno, cooking outdoors. Gertrude Van Roekel said they are probably cooking Tiswin, a non-alcoholic drink made from sprouted grain. Tiswin is a sour drink very suited for quenching thirst and is usually used for festive occasions. Making Tiswin is a laborious task taking all day. First you have to grind corn that has been sprouted on a metate until it is fine enough to make a gruel when mixed with water. You then boil and stir it in water all day over a slow fire of embers for low heat. The cooking was done in discarded paint buckets or other similar cans. The girls are wearing modern school-girl type dresses. The girl on the left is wearing the typical wide silver studded leather belt that is tied with leather thongs. The knife carried under the belt was in a leather pouch. This knife was used for many purposes but primarily to use when gathering reeds and for weaving baskets. The second girl is wearing a wide woven yarn belt often obtained from the Oklahoma tribes. Note the brick fireplace in the background, the stack of wash tubs, the washboard, and the water storage drum to the left. In the lower right corner are mocassins which are being worked on.
