description:
|
Ki-it-su (right) sits on the bumper of a car holding baby Arnold with daughter Kathryn (left) holding her brother Matthew. According to Gertrude Van Roekel, Ki-it-su's family was living in a permanent home on the reservation. They hired others, often Navajo, to herd their sheep. Some Jicarilla Apache families had permanent Navajo families as sheepherders who they treated almost as part of their own families.
