description:
|
Two women pose by an Indian Oven. Note the flat wooden paddle. According to Gertrude Van Roekel, these ovens were rare amongst the Jicarilla who copied them from their Pueblo friends. The oven was built of bricks and covered with mud. A large fire preferably of pinon wood was built. After the fire the ashes are raked out and loaves of bread are placed inside using the flat paddle. The door and chimney are blocked to allow the bread to bake.
