description:
|
Choke-cherries grow wild. They are gathered and dried for winter use. They are a small cherry with a soft stone inside. The berry and pits are ground on the grinding stone or metate by the mano or hand-stone. The ground fresh fruit is molded in little flat cakes and placed in open air to dry. In the dry high altitude air, this is about a four-day process. They are stored in cloth bags. The little cakes are boiled as we would use prunes.
