description:
Goost-cha-du Julian was one of the Indians who lived near Cimarron, New Mexico during the pre-reservation nomadic days according to Gertrude Van Roekel. The Apache learned the art of basketry from the Taos Pueblo Indians. All the hand tools are near including an awl for piercing the reed (note the reed coils), a knife in a sheath at her belt for cutting the reed, and a pan of water to keep it moist and pliable. The sheep is for comfort and to help anchor the basket. Gertrude was surprised that she is doing the final trim in the photo as there are cultural taboos.
