description:

The excavator is a unique sight at a paleontology site as the driver assists with removing dirt at the Stegomastodon dig at Weiss Gravel Pit near Holycke, Colorado. In the foreground is the vertebra of the stegomastodon. The stegomastodon is an extinct proboscidean which lived 1.2 to 6 million years ago. It stood 2.8 metres (9 ft) tall and looked like a robust version of the modern elephant. It weighed about 13,000 lb.
