Stegomastodon dig at Weiss Gravel Pit near Holyoke, Colorado. Hannah O'Neill DMNS volunteer; Alice Steindler DMNS volunteer with stegomastodon spine/vertebra. The stegomastodon is an extinct proboscidean which lived 1.2 to 6 million years ago. It stood 2.8 metres (9 ft) tall and looked like a robust version of the modern elephant. It weighed about 13,000 lb.
