description:
This image documents the locations for two adjacent paleontological quarries (collectively known as the Trigonias quarry located near Horsetail Creek.) in which a rich deposit of fossils was discovered. The "lower quarry" at the far right of the image is an excavation site where several Titanotherium (prehistoric pig) fossils were uncovered. The "upper quarry" is slightly higher on the horizon on the left side of the image yielded at least three complete Trigonias skeletons as well as at least thirty-seven skulls, fifty-nine pairs of mandibles, eight pelvic girdles, eight trays of vertebrae, several complete sets of ribs, and numerous limb bones. The site yielded remains of a variety of prehistoric rhinoceroses. Duplicate skeletal materials were used in exchange with various institutions across the country including The Field Museum and Harvard University. Scanning and access made possible by a grant from NEH.
