description:

This is a small translucent gray obsidian blade found wedged in the crack of the Stela during its inspection; appears to be an artifact, but unclear how it got to this spot; These photos were taken during an evaluation of Caracol, Stela 3 (A1038.1) in preparation for an exhibit entitled "Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed," scheduled to open at the DMNS in February 2014. The evaluation included an overall examination of the stela's condition and devising a strategy to create a new mount for the stela for the exhibit.
