The vertebra looks like it's split into sections even though the bone is continuous because the attached portions are above or below the section. In between the sections is the end of the spinal cord, called the 'cauda equina' or 'horses tail.' Those little circles are nerves that have split off from the spinal cord. Compare this to superior (higher up) sections with images of the spinal cord.
