Bougainville Island, Crown Prince Range. Typed on envelope " Some of the native carriers resting after ascending Mt. [illegible]. They were used to carry equipment and rations to the top of the peak where we were to carry on our work. August 1949, CJ Johnson. The pipe that native has in his mouth was traded from natives in the Kieta area who make these clay pipes. The natives in the picture are from Kumpani Village."
