description:

Guadalcanal Island, Kukom Docks. Typed on envelope "The British vessel Kuri Marau about to dock at Kukom Docks, Guadalcanal. It was on this vessel that prisoners from the island of Malaita were brought to the British settlement of Honiara to work as slave labor for refusing to work for the British in the Coconut Groves. The natives struck for higher pay and the British promptly took one thousand men and boys prisoner to work as slave labor. This happened in late '48 or quite early in 1949. September 1949, CJ Johnson." Scanning and access made possible by a grant from NEH.
