description:
|
The kachina represents the spirit of the earth god. Masao Kachina does not live in the mountains like the other kachinas, and he can visit the Hopis at any time of the year. He often comes in August after the Niman Kachina, when the other kachinas have departed. The Hopi recognize approximately thirty-six major supernatural beings or deities. Masao rules the earth's surface, which he allotted to the Hopis, and the underworld, where he terrifies all as the diety of death. Called Masawkatsina/MĂ asaw in the Hopi Dictionary.
