description:
Carved wooden Kachina doll. The case mask is divided vertically, painted yellow and red on one side and blue and yellow on the other. The mouth is a horizontal line with beard. The ruff is a wildcat skin with paws. It wears a kilt, sash and blue moccasins. The body is painted white with black forearms and a black circle on stomach. There are white dots on the black paint. It carries yucca leaf whips. Said to come from Zuni or from Laguna. Appears in numbers with Mud Head Clowns who sing; Hilili remains silent. The Hilili Kachina Dance is sometimes called a "Witchcraft Dance", i.e. against witchcraft. Another form of Hilili appears in the Pamuya at First Mesa and is said to be of Zuni origin.
