Tohono O'odham (Papago) woman using a paddle to smooth the bottom of a pot made out of course clay. The clay pots were used to for water, grain, cooking and trade. After graduating from Columbia University in Anthropology, Ruth Underhill studied a group of Native Americans in southern Arizona. Through her scientific research she was able to preserve the original language, poetry and songs of the Tohono O'odham (Papago) people.
