Bison skull specimen EPV.60678 in situ, L-R Curator of Archaeology Steve Holen, Tom Richardson DMNS Volunteer, Dr. Daniel Fisher mastodon expert from the University of Michigan, Penn State Mammoth expert Russ Graham, Museum Chief Curator and Vice President Kirk Johnson with excavation equipment in background. This may be the only excavation where construction workers worked side by side with museum volunteers to remove the largest number of fossils in a short amount of time. Bulldozer drives deftly removed tons of top burden while experienced volunteers sifted through the dirt. Some drivers distinguish when the blade hit rock, bone, or wood by the way "it felt".
